About Us
The Centre for Research and Education in Ageing (CREA) has been established to focus on research and education for ageing in response to changing needs of our ageing population. The Centre will facilitate collaboration across existing organisations and individuals providing research, education, products and services required of an ageing population.
The Centre for Research and Education in Ageing (CREA) will contribute to the enhancement and continued development of the Australian health industry, in particular, in the area of ageing and aged care. The Centre will facilitate collaboration across existing organisations and individuals working in the fields of research, education, products and services required of an ageing population.
The role of CREA is to act as a vortex, a node of collaboration, and a centre of activity from which new ideas are nurtured and explored.
The Centre is based at the University of Newcastle and brings together businesses and researchers in a dynamic relationship that creates synergies and new alliances.
Outcomes of CREA will include:
- Development of capacity for ageing research
- Research for healthy ageing
- Research into effective public response to an ageing population
- Improved prevention and management of age-related illness and complications
- Innovation and evaluation in aged care
- Workforce development
CREA is supported by the Newcastle Institute of Public Health (NIPH) which is an Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) member group and Baptist Community Services. Activities of other groups are included in the focus of CREA eg, Falls and Instability in Older People Research Group.
Some activities of the Research Institute for Gender and Health (particularly the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health) that relate to ageing in the mid and oldest cohort are included in the focus of CREA.
The Hunter Cohort is infrastructure for a number of research groups including CREA.

Hunter Ageing Research
A group of Hunter Researchers, particularly interested in ageing issues form Hunter Ageing Research. Hunter Ageing Research brings into focus the variety of research undertaken in the Hunter, to allow the best development of research and evidence for healthy ageing and aged care.
Our mission is: "To promote excellence in research in geriatrics and gerontology, to advance evidence-based care for older people with the aim of improving outcomes in physical, mental and social functioning."
Hunter Ageing Researchers meet regularly (see SEMINARS for dates) and produce a regular newsletter (see Centre for Research and Education in Ageing DOWNLOADS for copies).
